Austin area neighborhood guide
Lakeway, Texas
On the shores of Lake Travis, about 16 miles west of Austin, Lakeway began in 1963 as a lakeside inn and grew into a city of more than 19,000 people, with golf, marinas, hilly streets and deer in the yards.
A resort that became a city
Lakeway is its own city, not a part of Austin. Residents voted to incorporate as the Village of Lakeway in June 1974, and it became a home rule city in 1990. The 2020 census counted 19,189 residents, up from 11,391 in 2010, and Ranch Road 620 runs through the middle of town.
It started with an inn
In 1962, a group of Houston businessmen from the Gulfmont Hotel Company bought land that had been part of the Josey Ranch on Lake Travis. The Lakeway Inn opened on July 12, 1963, and it still welcomes guests today as Lakeway Resort and Spa.
A lake made by a dam
Lake Travis exists because of Mansfield Dam, built on the Colorado River in the early 1940s for flood control and power. The new lake turned old ranch land along the river into some of the most sought after shoreline in Central Texas.
An airpark in town
Lakeway has its own airpark, with a 4,100 foot runway open from sunrise to sunset. Since 1995 it has been owned and run by a nonprofit formed by airpark homeowners, so some neighbors can taxi from the runway to their own hangars.
