Austin neighborhood guide
Tarrytown, Austin, Texas
About three miles west of downtown, between MoPac and Lake Austin, Tarrytown is a neighborhood of 1920s cottages, mid century homes and new builds under big oak trees, with a lakeside art park, a garden full of peacocks and a pharmacy that has been open since 1941.
Where oak trees charm the eye
Tarrytown was planned as a quiet residential escape from downtown, and it still feels like one. Its early advertising promised a place “where oak trees charm the eye,” and generations of families have stayed on to prove the point. Most of the homes are older, with many built in the 1940s and 1950s, mixed in with 1920s cottages and a steady stream of new construction.
Named for a New York summer home
Development began in 1934, and the neighborhood took the name of Tarrytown, New York, the site of a family summer retreat belonging to the people behind the development.
Land with a long story
Before the subdivision, this land was part of Woodlawn, the estate around the mansion that master builder Abner Cook built in 1853 for Texas comptroller James Shaw.
Laguna Gloria
On a peninsula along Lake Austin sits Laguna Gloria. The land once belonged to Stephen F. Austin, and later to newspaper editor Hal Sevier and his wife, Clara Driscoll, the philanthropist known as the savior of the Alamo. Today it is part of The Contemporary Austin.
